Bizzell Lawn Care has been in business for nearly 40 years. De Bizzell is part of the third generation to lead the company, and over the past decade, he’s focused the operation on turf applications. It’s not just lawns, though. They tackle sports fields and golf courses, too.
“We had about 60 clients when I took over the application side,” Bizzell said. “Today, we have between 1,200 and 1,300 clients across two companies.”
With that kind of volume, efficiency is essential. That’s why Bizzell Lawn Care runs Steel Green equipment, including a customized SGXL.
It’s Built for Large Properties
Back when the SGXL was in development, the Steel Green team wanted feedback from the people who would be using it, so Bizzell and others had a front-row seat to the planning process.
“When they started showing us the idea for the SGXL, really pushing into the golf course realm, I started looking at it like, this machine is going to be great—not just for golf, but for industrial parks, big commercial layouts, and athletic fields,” said Bizzell.
“De wanted something that one guy could get on and cover lots of acreage,” said his rep, Eric O’Hare of Advanced Turf Solutions. “So, that’s when we decided to take a look at the SGXL.”
Once the SGXL launched, Bizzell ordered their machine with a 10-tip boom, which has helped make applications easier and faster while staying accurate.
“Instead of having the traditional eight-tip, we have a 10-tip [boom], and so that’s two-to-one compared to an SG52,” Bizzell said. “What used to take us twice as long to do baseball and soccer fields, now one person gets it done in the time of two.”
His team typically uses the SGXL on properties larger than two acres, including veterans cemeteries, football fields, and municipal spaces. It’s also used to assist golf courses when they’re behind on applications.
“It’s built like a tank,” Bizzell said. “It holds hills well for the size that it is. I’ve used both of their main competitors on golf courses, and when spraying fairways and greens, I pick the SGXL. It’s second to none.”
“The control it has—being zero-turn—is unmatched for the size of the machine,” Bizzell continued. “You don’t lose power or pressure even when climbing hills or [when it’s] fully loaded.”
Time Savings and Beneficial Tech
With such a large client base, saving time on each job matters.
“Our machine has a 16- or 18-foot swath,” Bizzell said. “That’s literally two SG52s. Instead of paying two employees to be there, I’ve got one on the job and the other out making money elsewhere. The SGXL makes that possible.”
Bizzell is outspoken on how the SGXL opens the door to more work.
“The more property you cover accurately, the more money a company is going to make,” Bizzell said. “And it frees up more time to take on more properties and more responsibilities.”
At Steel Green, we’re dedicated to innovation, so we’re always looking for ways to improve the application experience. We’ve added a few features recently, and Bizzell plans to add them.
“We’re about to take it back and have them upgrade even more,” Bizzell said. “We’re adding the Opti-Rate and the Razor Tracking.”
“Razor Tracking, especially, for a company owner, being able to pull up and see where the machines are and what they’re doing in the field—that will be absolutely huge,” said Bizzell.
Plus, at Steel Green, you get a lot for your money.
“There’s the efficiency aspect, and also the price point,” said O’Hare. “So, not only did De increase his efficiency with a bigger sprayer, he didn’t have to spend 60 to 80,000 dollars to do it.” O’Hare continued, “The SGXL really fits the needs of folks that are looking to cover a lot of ground and do it at a good value.”
Strong Support from Steel Green
We run a pretty down-to-earth operation, and we’re going to pick up the phone when you call. To Bizzell, it shows.
“When you get to talk to the owner of a company, stuff happens quickly,” Bizzell said. “You’re going to get a first-class experience when it comes to support and maintenance.”
When you own a piece of equipment with hundreds of different parts from various manufacturers, it’s hard not to expect something to go wrong eventually. Think about your car. Sometimes, a part ends up being a dud. When there’s an issue, we address it immediately.
He’s seen the same level of responsiveness time and again, whether it’s ordering an oil filter or asking a question.
“They always pick up, you get parts in 24 to 48 hours, and the support is second to none,” said Bizzell.
Bizzell’s experience with Advanced Turf Solutions has also been positive, and has helped him make the most of his machine.
“De and I have built a really good relationship with one another through Steel Green and also on the agronomic side through ATS,” said O’Hare. “I’m really grateful that we’ve been able to help De as he’s grown his company. De is really good at what he does, and he only trusts the best, so it’s humbling that he trusts us.”
The Machines Fit the Job
For Bizzell, each Steel Green model plays an important role.
“They all have their purpose. From the SG36 to the SGXL, Steel Green has built a strong lineup,” said Bizzell. “The quality of the machines and the support behind them is what keeps us coming back.”
If you’re looking for a great machine and a team that’s always a call away if you need them, Steel Green has your back. Take a look at our lineup if you want to learn more about our equipment.
